Lacrosse Uniform Decoration Rules

The Lacrosse uniform says a lot about your team, and what you stand for. Before you design your Lacrosse jersey, make sure you know what the official rules are. But remember that rules can vary from team to team, so be sure and check with your local organization. Here is some general information about lacrosse uniform and equipment rules.

High School Lacrosse Uniform Rules

Men's Lacrosse Uniforms

Men's high school lacrosse uniform and equipment with the exception of the goalie basically consists of shorts, shirt, shoes and cleats, socks, mouth guard, helmet, eye shield, gloves and shoulder pads.

Colors and Numbers

The high school lacrosse jersey must be a solid color. Home and visiting team colors must contrast. If they do not, the visiting team will be responsible for making the adjustment, but officials have the final say. Jerseys must be numbered, numbers being 8 inches high in front, 12 inches on back. Undergarments and sweat pants must be a solid color, identical to all team members.

Trademarks

Jersey trademark can be no larger than 2-1/4 square inches. Commemorative patches and US flags are allowed.

Jewelry: Not allowed, except for medical or religious medals which must be taped to the body.

Women's Lacrosse Uniforms

A basic women's uniform and equipment (with the exception of the goalie) consists of shirt, shorts/kilt, shoes with cleats, socks, mouth guard, soft headgear (allowed, but not required), gloves and shoulder pads.

Colors and Numbers

The color of the high school home vs. visitor jersey will be agreed upon by the coaches.

The jersey must display a number 6 inches tall in the center of the front, and 8 inches centered on the back. Numbers on shorts or kilt are optional, but must match the shirt number. Undergarments: black, white, or same as uniform, and all team members must be the same.

Trademarks

Trademarks may not exceed 2-1/4 square inches. US flags and commemorative patches are allowed.

College Lacrosse Uniform Rules

Men's Lacrosse Uniforms

The following information is from the 2009-10 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Rules, Rule 1, under a section subtitled: Personal Equipment; pp. 19-22. For complete rules and details, check out the Official Men's NCAA 2009-10 Lacrosse Rules and Interpretations.

A men's lacrosse uniform basically consists of a jersey, shorts, shoes, gloves, shoulder pads and arm pads, helmet, face mask, and mouthpiece. Goalkeepers wear a throat and chest protector, but are not required to wear shoulder and arm pads. Details about the helmet, face mask, and mouthpiece, are located under section 20, of Rule 1 of the publication.

The rules state that all players must wear a protective helmet that includes a chin pad and strap. Face masks must possess a center bar from top to bottom, with the manufacture's label attached to the helmet. Plastic face shields are optional but must be clear. Tinted shields may be worn under medical approval. Players are required to wear an approved mouthpiece that covers entire upper jaw teeth.

Colors and Numbers

Unlike with high school rules, the jersey need not be a solid color. Team shorts must be uniformly the same dominant team color. The home team wears white or light-colored jerseys, however if coaches from both teams agree, they can opt to waive this rule. Jersey colors of both teams must contrast. If they do not, the home team will change its jerseys.

Undergarments visible under jerseys, compression shorts and sweat pants must be a solid white, gray, or a team color. Under jerseys of all team members must match, and be tucked in. The same rule applies to compression shorts and sweat pants - they must match.

The jersey must contain a number centered on the front, and at least 10 inches high. Numbers on back must measure 12 inches in height.

No mention is made of trademarks.

Shoes

Composition or rubber soles only. Cleats must not be longer than one-half inch. For information about other equipment, and details about the uniform, see Rule 1.

No dangerous jewelry.

Women's Lacrosse Uniforms

The following information is from the 2009-10 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Rules and Interpretations, Rule 2, under a section subtitled: Equipment and Uniforms; pp. 17-22.

Women's basic lacrosse uniform and equipment may include shirts, shorts/kilts, shoes and cleats, socks, mouthpiece, eye protection, gloves, nose guards, and soft headgear.

Goalkeeper's uniform and equipment basically includes a helmet with face mask, throat protector, padded gloves, mouthpiece, and chest protector. Arms, legs, and shoulder padding is recommended, but must not overly increase the size of the body parts, and must not exceed 1 inch thickness.

Colors and Numbers

Team uniforms must be identical, except for the goalie, who will wear the same colors.

Competing teams must have contrasting colors. If not, the home team will make the adjustment. Visible undergarments must be of a solid color, and either white, gray, or the primary uniform color.

Fronts and backs of shirts must be numbered. Back numbers must be at least 8 inches tall, front numbers at least 6 inches and centered chest level. Numbers on bottoms are optional but must match top numbers. Numbers must clearly contrast color of shirt.

No mention is made of trademarks.

Shoes

Composition or rubber sole only. No spikes, but plastic, rubber or leather cleats are okay. Shoes and socks are not considered part of the uniform and do not have to be identical.

Jewelry, Etc.

No jewelry, unless for medical reasons. Sweatbands are allowed. Safe barrettes are permitted.
